In an Arab ESL class, the teacher – as his opening class – would ask the students what English words were taken from the Arabic. A few hands would jerk up and say things like, ‘Chemistry from Keemiyaa’, Algebra from AlGebr, Physics from Feesiyaa’, etc.’ Then he would interestingly ask them what Arabic words were taken from the English, the answers come quick, ‘Raadiyo from Radio, Dosh from Satellite Dish, and of course Tilfaaz from TV.’
What did the west take from us, and what did we take from them?

আরব ESL ক্লাস এর প্রথমদিন শিক্ষক ছাত্রদের জিজ্ঞেস করলেন কোন ইংলিশ শব্দগুলো অ্যারাবিক থেকে নেয়া হয়েছে? প্রশ্নের উত্তর দেয়ার জন্য কয়েকজন হাত উত্তোলন করলো, ‘কেমিস্ট্রি নেয়া হয়েছে কেমিয়া থেকে’, ‘অ্যালজেবরা নেয়া হয়েছে আলজিবর থেকে’, ‘ফিসিক্স নেয়া হয়েছে ফিসিইয়া থেকে’ ….। এরপর তিনি ছাত্রদের আবার জিজ্ঞেস করলেন কোন আরবী শব্দগুলো ইংলিশ থেকে নেয়া হয়েছে? উত্তরটি খুব দ্রুত পাওয়া গেল, ‘র‍াদিও এসেছে রেডিও থেকে’, ‘ডোস এসেছে স্যাটেলাইট ডিশ থেকে’ এবং ‘তিলফাস এসেছে টিভি থেকে’।
পশ্চিমারা আমাদের থেকে কি নিল আর আমরা তাদের নিকট থেকে কি নিয়েছি?
